What

We have four fantastic speakers joining us to share their experiences and connections to our local waterways. You’re sure to be inspired and stoked for the season ahead!

Squamish Ice Mile with Roberta Cenedese

Roberta Cenedese is the owner/operator of Oceanoid, a company that specializes in teaching and coaching freediving in Vancouver, BC. Roberta has been swimming in and around Howe Sound for over 20 years and in the last 10 years developed a fascination and love for skin swimming and cold water. Along with her training partner marathon swimmer Jessi Harewicz (Triple Crown holder, Salish Sea crossing, Bowen Island), on December 18th 2020 in Squamish, BC they became the 6th & 7th Canadians to have successfully completed an Ice Mile as ratified by the International Ice Swimming Association.

Roberta will be speaking about her Ice Mile experience this past winter.

Across the Salish Sea with Rachel Schoeler

Rachel Schoeler is an avid open water swimmer and dedicated environmentalist standing up for our natural right to swimmable water through work, volunteer opportunities and sport. She fell in love with the water at a young age in her backyard pool and found an incredible community and her true passion in open water swimming after moving to the west coast over 10 years ago. She volunteered with Vancouver Open Water Swim Association for 8 years and is stoked to be volunteering with Swim Wild Squamish! Whether it’s a jump off the dock or a long training swim, she’s just happy to be in the water.

Rachel will be speaking about her crossing of the Salish Sea (Georgia Strait) from Nanaimo to Sechelt.

Howe Sound Marine Guide with Bridget John

Trading in the Great Lakes for the Pacific Ocean, Bridget John has made Átl’ka7tsem/Howe Sound home, living at the mouth of the fjord in Squamish, BC. Bridget is a graduate of the biology and oceanography program at UBC and will be starting a masters of marine spatial planning and management in the fall. Her life has always revolved around the marine environment, working as a cetacean researcher in Wales, a fisheries observer on commercial fishing boats off BC’s northwest coast and as an ocean educator with the Ocean Wise Mobile Programs travelling all over western Canada.

Bridget will be speaking about her recent work with the Howe Sound/Átl’ka7tsem Marine Reference Guide as a research assistant building capacity to improve the long-term health and revitalization of the Sound.

Get to Know the Gear with Santi Morales

Santi is a former competitive pool swimmer, these days he races and trains in open water during the spring/summer/fall season. He discovered open water swimming a few years back and is very passionate about the sport. He is also a swim coach for both entry level and high level competitive swimmers. Santi is the BC sales rep for Team Aquatic Supplies, and has been with the company for about 7 years.

Santi will be giving us some tips for open water swimming gear to set us up for success for the season ahead.

Quiz and Prizes

There will be some draw prizes for attendees, so be sure to stick around to the end! We’ll be announcing the prizes over our social media channels as we get closer to the party so be sure to follow us there.

Some of these prizes will be for the winners of our Kahoot Quiz. If you haven’t used this before, it’s an interactive multiple choice quiz where you compete with other participants! You get points for a correct answer, and also for the fastest answer. If you’re joining the Zoom on your laptop or desktop, have your smartphone or tablet handy to join the quiz. We’ll walk you through how to join.
